Cloth diapers stink and are not hygienic

In this post I'm going to put together two myths, usually two statements that appear linked in many conversations: Cloth diapers smell bad and are not hygienic at all.

as fraldas ecologicas não são higienicas

Cloth diapers smell bad

A completely wrong statement. In reality the worst smelling diapers are the disposable ones.

I know that you will only believe me after trying it. But I dare you to ask a family that uses reusable diapers and occasionally has to use disposable diapers.

The answer is unanimous, the smell of disposable diapers is unbearable.

Cloth diapers only smell bad when they have coconut and it's the natural smell.

Nobody likes yours bathroom smelling like a shopping center changing room. But that's what will happen in your bathroom when using disposable nappies. You will have to take out the trash every day and even then you won't be able to disguise the smell.

Cloth diapers don't smell bad if they are stored in an airy place and washed like what they are: very dirty clothes.

Reusable diapers are not hygienic

Usually accompanied with the myth about smell comes the claim that reusable nappies are not hygienic.

Well if that were true, the entire population over 35 in Portugal should be riddled with infectious diseases. It's just that 30-35 years ago everyone used cloth diapers and they were washed in community tanks.

Diapers are nothing more than very dirty clothes, nothing more. It's not because they have pee and baby poop that they don't stay clean. Proper washing of diapers ensures that they are clean.

If you have concerns, you can disinfections periodically every 4-6 weeks.

Think like this, Do you use cuecas every day and put them in the wash or not?

Do you throw your clothes in the trash after use or wash them?

You realize that babies' bodies also get dirty with coconut, pee, food, fruit, dog drool, etc... that's not why you throw them away, right?

The idea behind the Meekbum project is to inform and educate for a practical and simple use of this option. For many families it makes all the difference at the end of the month and believes that the environment is grateful. Every baby who uses cloth diapers contributes to a ton less waste in landfills.
