Can I iron the reusable diapers?
To iron or not to iron reusable diapers, that is the question!
Do you iron all your clothes?
The diapers too? To the diapers are clothes right? 🙃
If there's one task that I even like to do, it's ironing. I hate doing the dishes!
While I iron with you for a few sets a day. And believe me, I choose the clothes I buy and check that I don't have to iron them. But of course some pieces there really have to be ironed.
Not reusable diapers! And I am writing to you about this because two mums have recently contacted me about this topic.
Someone from the family, to help them with the housework, ironed all their diapers.
yes, I felt the pain with them when I read the messages. In some cases it is possible to revert, in others it is not.
Alert who helps you so this doesn't happen to you. People are in the old days. When they ironed everything “to disinfect”. They just don't know that in the old days diapers were all cotton. And in the past they didn't have washing machines at 40/60ºC.
Help those who help you and explain that they cannot iron your beautiful diapers.
Before writing to you, I spoke with 8 diaper brands on this topic and in these three points I summarize the information I exchanged with them so it was a joint effort.
3 reasons not to iron diapers
1. If you iron the diapers, they are no longer waterproof
The diaper's waterproof layer is resistant, but if you iron it, you'll see this layer melt with iron.
That's why diapers are damaged if you wash them at more than 90º or if you put them in the dryer at high temperature.
2. Ironing decreases tissue absorption
There are temperature sensitive fabrics. Bamboo, for example, the higher the temperature at which you wash it, the more it shrinks.
If you iron absorbent pads, fittings or any absorbent part, you will damage the fibers of the fabric. Be they natural or synthetic.
The fabrics are like a giant net. The lines are intertwined and it is in the middle of the lines that the liquid is absorbed. By ironing, you will reduce the volume of this braid and as a result tissue loses absorbency.
A microfiber, which has a plastic component, spoils without possible reversal. That is, if you iron a pad that has microfiber in its composition, you will ruin it.
3. Because you have more to do with your time
There are clothes that really have to be ironed. The rest is fold and done! Go play with your baby!!
I know that there are people who like to iron even their underpants. But you already know, don't iron the diapers otherwise you'll lose your investment.
Is there a way to reverse the diapers to their normal state?
Good. Honestly, it's not guaranteed, but this helps: wash your diapers with a little fabric softener to help loosen the fibers and toss them in the dryer to soften them up.
That's why I wanted to help you with this email. To prevent more moms from going through the same. If necessary, write a note in red saying: DO NOT IRON THE DIAPERS!
